Topic: gear lube levels... trans & rear

I drained my 39 transmission and filled it with 2.5 pints of straight 140 GL 4. As I have the floorboards out, it is easy to fill and also see the lube in the casing. The lube level falls just short of the overflow plug...maybe 1/8 inch below the treads. Is it best to simply filled until flowing out over the treads? I remember that some have cautioned NOT to overfill the trans as it might flow down the torque tube into the rear axle housing, so I simply used the Ford recommended volume. When I next opened the overflow plug on the rear axle, excess lube flowed out at a pretty good clip. So, same question...fill the rear until lube flows past the overflow threads? Thanks!

To keep leaks at a minimum, it is best to keep the oil levels just below the filler hole. Transmissions tend to leak down the torque tube into the rear axle., and if not checked, can leak into the brakes, ruining the linings.

Keeping the universal filled with grease will slow down the leaking of the transmission grease into the rear end.
