With car moving, shifting from 1st to 2nd causes gear grinding unless down pressure is held on shift lever while moving into 2nd. Is this a linkage problem? Also, how does one remove the lower column shift lever assemblies besides unbolting the lower column bracket? Would like to replace the brass grommets. Carl

You can replace the grommets by removing the shift rods and installing new grommets. Then, with the side plate arms in the neutral position, the rods should slip on without moving the arms. We recently helped with a shifting problem in a 46 car by learning the the u-joint had been installed without the spacer required in the u-joint. Be sure you have the spacer, washer, and bolt correctly installed.

Are you sure that you have the correct free play in the clutch pedal?

I would try adjusting the clutch before messing with the shifting arms.

My experience has been that when the bushings in the shift arms are worn, the transmission does not go fully into the gear selected and then it pops out under load.

Gear grinding is usually caused by the clutch not disengaging fully. The Ford pressure plate increases pressure on the clutch as the RPMs increase, so letting the engine slow down to idle speed will help.
