h*llo, i'm looking for a set of front shocks for my 1946 ford super deluxe. it no longer has knee shocks they were not there when i got the car. it had tube type shocks all around. found a new set for the rear. can't find ones for front . anyone know where or who may have ones that fit? tried napa no good. 100 horse running wild

Go to a decent parts store (no, not Autozone or that type) and ask a guy that knows what he's doing. He can look up shocks by diameter, collapsed length and extended length as well as a number of other parameters.

do you remember part number for the monroes? have hard ware on car to mount the shocks just need the shocks to put in. the ones on the car compressed are 12" full ext are 18" . im not sure if these are correct shocks but this is what i measured. 100 horse running wild This message was edited by 46fordnut on 4-20-11 @ 7:46 PM

I use the front shocks off of a Chevy Van, 1977-80? I have used them on at least five 40-48 Fords

I beleive the Monore # for the front is 32207. NAPA use to be RR94038. I think the name of a supplier is "Rock City Auto" or something like that. I get several bat. cables etc from them, just can't be sure of their name.The place is Rockauto.com This message was edited by 42guy on 4-20-11 @ 8:06 PM

The size of the shocks depends on the distance between the studs on the mounts. As the '46 &'47s originally had lever shocks, the later tube mounts varied. The travel distance is critical to safe handling.

I used #94038 front shocks from NAPA on the front of my '40 pickup with a ;40 Merc front axle. I would think they would work on yours. Shiny side up! Cecil/WV

46fordnut My front shocks are Monroe 31000. I wouldn't necessarily buy them for your car as the upper mount was "handmade" on my car and may not be the same size or angle as yours. Monroe's website has a chart that shows the extended and compressed dimensions for their shocks. Using this you can either replace your old shocks using their dimensions or measure your car. I would think you should buy the dimensions that ensure you don't run out of shock before you run out of the fully compressed or fully extended dimension of you car. Hope this makes some sense. If memory serves (which is a chance unto itself), I bought mine at a NAPA. John

found ones at napa very close to what came off. ext 17.875 and compressed are 11.75 does not get much better then this!!! just cant get the tapered stud out of bottom mount hole in i beam. 100 horse running wild

Removing those studs or any other tapered part can be tough. About the only thing that works is the application of heat, which will break the rust bond. It requires an acetylene torch with a fine tip. Other heat sources seldom do the job. Another technique is to weld a nut onto the end of the stud. The heat will loosen the stud, and you can work it out with a wrench. We use that trick often with a wire welder. This message was edited by supereal on 4-25-11 @ 8:31 PM
