Topic: Flathead Starter Question

My 48 Ford has a flathead 8 and is still 6 volt. When I start it the starter starts the car but I think it sounds funny. It clicks the whole time its cranking. Is this normal? I made sure all connections are clean and tight and even doubled them up with jumper cables to make sure.

Dipper, from your description, it sounds like your starter button on the dashboard is at fault. The wire from your solenoid to your starter button is supposed to go to ground when you depress the button. Try cranking by simply bypassing the button to ground to test my guess. I think the click you hear is the solenoid dropping out/pulling in.

I'd pull the starter and examine the drive. It is likely that the gear has a missing or damaged tooth. It can also be due to a loose Bendix spring if either of the bolts are loose. We sometimes find that the special locks on those bolts were omitted. If the drive appears to be OK, there may be a missing or damaged tooth or teeth on the ring gear. It is hard to see that through the starter mounting hole, but it can be done. Pull the spark plugs and rotate the ring gear with a big screwdriver as you look with a good flashlight. Replaciong a ring gear is a fairly big job because the flywheel has to come out.
