Topic: 1940 hood removal

How difficult is it to remove and reinstall the hood without scratching the paint? It looks like a five man job. Four to carefully lift the hood and one to remove the bolts. Do the springs have much tension on them? Thanks!

I've did it this way many times. 1-raise hood. 2-cut safety wire from back bolts { if it's still on there } 3-place a quilt or other such THICK covering over the cowl and fenders. 4-have someone hold the front of the hood as you remove the spring arms from the hood. tha springs don't have any force on them with the hood up. 5-remove four rear bolts from back of hood. 6-lift off hood. I've never used 5 people to do this; usually 3 and have done it with 2 if the hood is proped in front with a rod. It's not a big deal, but use as many people as you feel comfortable with.

Thanks 40guy. That was a lot of help.

I've actually done it using three winch straps suspended from the garage rafters to the nose and two hood corners. The winch mechanism on the corners makes it a bit easier on small adjustments while you undo the side bolts. Just make sure the strap connections are secure.
