This question came up many times I did a search and came up empty. What is the correct way to adjust mechanical brakes on a 36Ford? Thanks dansford

I suggest that you purchase the re-print of the Service Letters as they include the drawings necessary to make the operation clear. The re-print is available form most vendors. Tom

I can only tell you how I do it. First, back off the adjusters on the backing plates. Then, block the brake pedal down half way, and turn the clevis on each brake rod until the lining just touches the drum. Release the pedal and adjust the backing plates until the wheel locks, then back off until the wheel turns freely. This synchronizes the rods. Don't try to readjust the rods, or you will upset the system. If you need more "pedal"', use the adjuster between the pedal and the cross shaft. If done correctly, and the proper woven linings are used, you should be able to slide the wheels in a panic stop.

Ford's instructions say: Expand the brake shoes Adjust the cross shaft Adjust the rods Equalize the drag. Each step has additional instructions and diagrams to help understand the instructions, that is why I suggested that you buy the reprint of the Service Letters. With the Service Letters, you will have the instructions and diagrams as well as other Service information for your car. Tom
