Topic: Gas Tank sender

I had a gas tank sending unit installed in my 36 yesterday. It registers the gas level OK until the rpms are increased and then the needle goes out of sight over the full mark..whats going on?? I think I notice a resistor of some kind installed on top of the tank several yrs ago but it apparently has been taken off. I would appreciate any comments..Thanks again for your help. DK

The reading will vary as the system voltage rises and falls. This can indicate that your generator is overcharging, which can eventually damage your battery. I assume your '36 has a three brush generator. Place a voltmeter across the battery poles and run the engine at a high idle to close the cutout. Rev the engine and observe the voltage. If it is over about 7.5 volts with the headlights off, move the brush until it does. Most of us don't drive our old cars at night, but if you do, adjust the brush with the lights turned on. The thing you saw connected to the sender terminal was likely a condenser. They were installed to reduce radio noise, but didn't affect the gauge, and are not required.

8:07 am reply. Thanks for your reply. I'll check to see what the voltage is at the battery terminals. I assume it should not be over 7.5 volts to resolve the problem and save the battery. DK
