Topic: Brake drums

Looking to buy new drums for a 42. All the vendors sell several different ones. Some need special studs, some don't say. I am speaking of the drums that go over the hub. What is the difference in the ones being offered?
Thanks
Dick

You can buy the drums that go over the hubs,
you will need to buy new studs, and then take to a auto machine shop and have the studs installed, these need to be crimped ,so it holds the assembly together,,,
also have the drums [cut]trimmed this way you will know they are round, take a little as they can,
you might have to find a automachine shop that can handle this.
also you should pack the bearing with grease,
you will have to remove the bearing to have drums machined,,this is a good time to inspect the bearing, in the hub and also on axle housing,
make sure you replace the axle keys, also and inspect the groves in the axle ends that they go in,
hope this helps 37RAGTOPMAN

Dick: If your drums fit on the outside of the hubs, you have the 21-A type. The later 51-A type fits behind the hub flange, and requires replacing the studs. If your studs are not damaged, you should be able to replace the drums using the existing studs. If any studs need to be replaced, be sure to have the heads tack welded to be certain they will not break loose. If that happens, removing the lug nut is almost impossible. C&G shows replacement drums on page 35 of their online catalog. They aren't cheap, but quality is good.
