Topic: 1936 Hubcap Restoration

Just wanted to update on my 36 hubcap restoration. After getting the stainless steel off (drilled though the hubcap on the back side, then used an air hose to pop it off) I sent it to the local plater who took out a few small dings and buffed the stainless. Next challenge was to get the stainless back on to the cap after the hubcap had been repainted, Here's what worked for me: 1. sanded some of the paint off the outer rim of the cap to make the outside diameter just a bit smaller (Its a TIGHT fit), 2. spray some WD 40 on the rim of the painted part of the hubcap (It still would not slide over &%#*) 3. Put the stainless steel cap in the oven at 350 degrees for ten minutes so it would expand, 4. put the painted portion in the freezer for 30 minutes so it would contract. Take the cold hubcap out of the freezer, lay the stainless steel cap on the top, and with an oven mitt GENTLY tap the stainless steel hubcap around the edges with the heel of your hand... and WALLA... it slipped right over the top. Next step is to paint the indented V8... I'm assuming the paint is always black... Correct? Hope this helps

I have a couple of spare ones needing work... I'll try this.

Thanks Jim

According to the 1935-1936 Ford Book that the Club sells -- black for standard cars and body color for deluxe cars.
