Topic: To paint or not to paint

I'm detailing out the engine compartment in my '37. Are the screw and bolt heads which secure components to the firewall supposed to be painted? For example, the two screws securing the starter solenoid to the firewall and the wiring harness clamp and screw etc. etc.?

MG, Imagine yourself on the assembly line installing these small components. Then imagine a tiny elf following behind you with a teeny weeny paint brush...

No paint. Raven or cad. Exceptions were fasteners installed on assemblies before those assemblies were painted. Components were never masked off, as operations came in a well reasoned order. For your '37 in particular, cad for the solenoid screws, braided firewall ground, regulator screws, hood hinge fasteners and side panel wingnuts. Raven for most everything else, including radiator fasteners, support rod nuts, and hood/cowl insulator screws. Battery hold-down is raven, with cad bolts and black or grey rubber gaskets under the hold-down washers. Radio box fender washers and nuts are cad, fuse/resistor nuts brass. Gas line hold-down and screw cad. Your hood ratchet is cad, but is also painted body color, as a production line change, due to ratchet visibility through the louvers. Some controversy on that point may be due to some early units slipping through unpainted.

I don't have to imagine, I've seen the "elf" you mention in the bottom of my jar of Jack. What you say makes sence. Thanks for the detailed info.
