if you find a place to buy the 18 tooth gears please post, they make one for the MODEL A but it will not work,on the 35-48 FORDS,been there done that,
also 1928 to early 1930 MODEL A'S had different drives,
later 1930's and up used the square drives,
if you look in the FORD GREEN book it shows this,,,
it one of those deals that the vendor selling the parts never used them themselves.
you also need the 18 tooth housing to go with it,
they are fitted together,so the teeth will mesh correctly,
thanks 37RAGTOPMAN
any body has one that wants to sell one contact me,
I think 39 and up MERCURY's, might have come with the 18 tooth, because they came with the 354-1 as far as I know,

It is also dependent on the diameter of the tire.

Thanks very much for that information, I am running Firestone 600x16 tyres on the coupe. If anyone has a spare 18 tooth gear and housing, like 37RAGTOPMAN I would be interested.

18 teeth is correct. C&G (800/266-0470) shows them in their catalog as A-17271-E, about $15. They fit '28 to '48. You must use your existing housing (turtle) and, in some cases adapt the housing to the torque tube to assure good gear mesh.

The 18 tooth gear is correct for 3.54 gears. Bratton's Antique Auto Parts, located in MD, sells the 18 tooth gear and it will work if you have a #18 turtle housing. You can go to their on-line catalog and order what you need. I know they had the correct gear the last time I looked and they may also carry the correct turtle/speedo housing.

Rex Reheis in Alanta Ga .150 goldon eye court makes the gears I don't have his phone # ,if you call you have to holler loudly as he is quite deaf .John.

I must really be getting old... I remember buckets of turtles at swap meets. Complete turtles with gears, no need to modify for fit. Just fish for the one you need.

Aah, those were the days, Alan. We have a big semi annual swap meet here, and finding anything that vaguely resembles old Ford items is very rare. I used to buy coils for cores, and other Ford pieces, but if I do find them now, they are usually in awful condition, with an unreasonable asking price. Most swap meet stuff here is now heavily concentrated on 50's-60's muscle cars, etc. As my kids are all in their 50's, I should understand this trend, but I do miss the old stuff.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I ordered an 18 tooth gear from C& G last week but as yet they have not confirmed the part has been dispatched, now I will wait and see
