Is it necessary to have an engine balanced when I'm rebuilding ,using new rods and bearings changing crank to 8ba 59ab, block rods and pistons are within 1 gram of each other

Balancing is the cheapest and best thing you can do for your flathead. Be sure to balance the clutch and flywheel at the same time. You will notice a big difference in how smooth the engine will run.I would never do a flathead without balancing it.

Tom is right. The weight of the rod and piston assembly is not as critical as the crankshaft balance, but any really large differences should be sorted out. Even though we are extremely careful as we grind cranks in our shop, the balance can be affected. Some from material removed, but much is due to a shaft that was not balanced well to begin with. When they are run up in speed in the balancer, any periodic vibration is quickly seen. As flatheads are fairly slow rev engines, not a lot of attention was paid in years past. Now that modern engines are virtually vibration free, it is more easily noted.
