Topic: 32 Steering worm

I am rebuilding the steering box for my 32 Ford 5W. I have purchased a replacement 13:1 worm and sector from one of the well known suppliers. In comparing the old worm gear to the new one and lining up the thread starts, the taller alignment spline on the ID of the new gear is about 90 deg. off from the original one. Has anyone else observed this? Are the new 15:1 worms made incorrectly also? This missalignment would throw the steering wheel position off when pressed back on an original shaft I believe. Thanks

Most, if not all, steering gear parts are now foreign made, and there are often differences. If the steering wheel end of the shaft is serrated, you can move the wheel, if necessary. If not, the arm can usually be moved on the shaft to center the wheel, with any minor adjustments made with the drag link.

Yes, all the steering worm and sectors are made in Argentina but as of late they seem pretty good. The 32 steering wheel is keyed to the shaft so you can not fudge that position. The pitman arm has a specific spline pattern so it only goes on in one spot. The drag link on a 32 is not adjustable for length. No cheating here. The worm needs to be centered in its travel so that the lash can be set properly at its tightest spot. Has anyone actually replaced a 13:1 32 worm gear and what were your observations of the internal locating spline position. Thanks.

Check to see how the worm is attached to the shaft. You may be able to have it pressed off and relocated to match the original part.
