The emergency brake cable on my 46 has two U clamp adjusters and they are pretty much fully tightened. I suspect the cable was wrong length when new. I would like to install new correct length and know this requires pulling the hubs. The car had a complete brake job throughout within the past two years so I'm assuming the hubs should come off fairly easily. Nevertheless, am I still going to have to buy a puller, and is the whole project more trouble than it is worth? Thanks

The hubs have to come off, as the brake cable ends have to be put into the slots on the brake arms after being put through the guide tubes. If there aren't any threads left on the cable from the dash to take up the slack, you can cut one side of the rear cable, remove a section, and clamp the cut ends together with a couple of cable clamps usually available from a decent hardware store. Just overlap the ends and cinch them with the clamp. These are the ones with a small U bolt and a cast saddle. Unless you have a show car, no one will know. There used to be cable adjusters that pulled out the slack sold by Western Auto, etc,, but I haven't seen any for a very long time. As for hub pullers, any Ford owner who doesn't have the Winfield Tool KRW puller, should order one. They are an essential tool. They are advertised in the V8 TIMES. I've had one for many years, and they are top quality.

Thanks Supereal -never thought of that and just happen to have some like new cable clamps in my toolbox. You saved me a major project. Incidentally, the rebuild of my trans in New York state seems to have worked out fine.

I would first ajust the rear brakes and see if that lessens the amount of slack in the cables, also the rear drums should slide off without a puller, try it first before buying a puller, you might not need, my 3 cents worth 37RAGTOPMAN

If you can slide off the rear drums on a 32-48 Ford or Mercury without a puller, they were installed wrong and not torqued to 150 ft lbs. Tom
