Are you referring to the antenna trimmer? Unless the antenna has been modified and the radio is working, I wouldn't mess with. Then again it may not have an antenna trimmer. As to the knob on the side of the control head, it may be an RF Gain control used to suppress nearby stations so as not to overload the receiver and produce distorted sound. Some of those old radios would actually squeal if the rf gain was too high. What model radio is it?

  Sunflower-

If you are referring to the knob in the upper right-hand corner on the front, that is the tone selector.

Hadn't thought of that. Makes sense.

The antenna "trimmer" is just a variable condenser that, in effect, alters the length of the antenna. It usually appears as a hole in the radio case with a small screwdriver slot on the capacitor. Don't be afraid to adjust it, as it works in both directions, and you just turn it both ways a bit at a time until the noise is at a minimum, and the radio signal is best. I don't have a "Sam's" diagram of your radio, so I can't help with the exact location, but there should be a trimmer as described above. Much radio noise in old sets is generated by the vibrator. A good vintage radio shop can furnish an electronic "flip flop" replacement that helps clear up "hash".
