The judging standards only say that a 2.5 lb extinguisher is required for the car to be on the field for judging. Does it have to be ABC rated, BC rated or CO2? The ABC extinguishers are filled with a yellow powder that, if used, will leave a horrible sticky residue that is almost impossible to remove. The BC extinguishers are not much better as the residue is corrosive.

As I recall they are looking for a MINIMUM of 2 1/2 Lb ABC. The ABC units are more common and will cover many problems.
From a practical stand point, carry the biggest extinguisher you can, and keep it where you can grab it quickly.
Watching your car burn to the ground because your 2 1/2 lb extinguisher is buried in the trunk, would be heart breaking.

Regarding the mess powder type extinguishers make you might try Halon fire extinguishers. Halon is a clear agent that leaves no residue.Halon extinguishers are rated A, B, C. Be aware though that they are VERY expensive! A 2.5 Lb. one will cost around $195.00. Another type is Halotron which is basically the same thing. They run about $165.00 for 2.5 Lb and $155.00 for 1.4 Lb. Shop around.
I agree that the extinguisher should be where you can get to it quickly.
