I am needing to chase the threads on the intake manifold (distributor to intake vacuum line) port on a '36 intake manifold.Does anyone know the correct thread/tap size that I should be using? Thanking you in advance, Thomas

Most threaded ports on intakes are 1/8" pipe threads. This is 5/16", 27 threads to the inch, tapered hole. Pipe threads were commonly used, as they seal when they are tightened due to the conical shape. Chasing these threads is difficult, particularly if they are in an aluminum manifold. A 1/8" pipe thread tap can be used to confirm and clear the threads, but caution is required, or the threads can be easily damaged. Too often, common threading taps are used to chase holes, when a special tap for the job is required. These taps are not used to make threads, only to remove burs and crud. A threading tap may enlarge the holes and result in studs or bolts that strip the worn threads, which must then be Helicoiled to save the part or block.

Thank you for the information. That 5/16"-27 tapered thread is the same as a 1/8"-27 NPT thread. Thomas
