In the subject song referring to a V8 Ford, would you say that they are talking about a Flathead V8 Ford? I wouldn't be surprised if this has been discussed before.

Your guess is as good as the next guy. For the definitive answer, you may have to go to St. Louis and ask Chuck. The song definitely refers to a V-8 Ford. But it was written at Chess Records in Chicago in 1955. Could be a Flathead, could have had overhead valves. Ken

I always have assumed that he was referring to a flathead. Engine gets hot at speed - rain cools engine - car starts to go fast. Sounds like a flathead to me. . .

I was a sophomore in High School in So. Cal. when Maybelline came out. I can't imagine that this great Rock and Roll hit was directed at our parents or perhaps the High School Principal, who would have been the only kinds of people driving OHV Ford V8's. In those days, if you were lucky enough to drive, it most certainly would not be in a brand new car. The music was directed at US, and we drove old 30's and 40's flatheads, cheebies and plowmouths.
