Running the engine outside in the cold the other day in our '42 Super De Luxe I noticed steam coming from underneath, and sure enough there was a hole in the muffler. What's a good source for a replacement muffler, and any hints on intallation? As always, help greatly appreciated. Wayne & Barb '42 Super De Luxe Tudor

Most vendors have the "correct" muffler, 2GA-5230. C&G sells them for about $60. Almost always, when a muffler gives up, the tailpipe is close behind (no pun). The tailpipe is 6A-5255. C&G gets about $50, but shipping is a problem, due to the size for that, for some carriers. If you are not planning to be "correct", most good muffler shops will have a muffler to fit. If you look carefully at the muffler on your car, you may see drain holes at the bottom, next to the end plates. This may be the source of the vapor you see. When we replace mufflers at our shop, we recommend that a stainless steel tail pipe be made for it. Lightly driven cars are hard on exhaust systems, and the stainless pipe will last the rest of the life of the car, as well as look almost new for a very long time. A really good muffler shop can make one up for you for not much more than about twice the cost of an ordinary steel piece. It is not unusual to find old muffers about half full of carbon and other crud. It it sounds dull when tapped with a hammer, it is time to replace it.

Thanks very much for the response. There may be a little bit of steam coming from the drain holes you mention, but there is clearly a hole as well. I'll contact C&G about getting parts and add this to my list of things to do once the weather warms up a bit. Wayne & Barb '42 Super De Luxe Tudor
