I ordered a Bob Drake reproduction trunk handle for my '48 Tudor from C&G. When I received it the grooves in the base and the lock cover did not line up. I returned to C&G and Drake has told them that they are aware of the problem but are not going to do anything about it at this time. Kyle at C&G has been great. Just wondering if any one else has run into this.

Two years ago, after an idiot rear ended my '47 and destroyed a NOS trunk handle, I ordered a replacement from Drake. Prior to that time, another Drake handle had fallen apart, so I was leery of the quality. They told me that the faulty handle was foreign made, but they were now produced in-house by Drake. The new handle was of excellent quality, as promised. The grooves in the key cover do line up with those on the handle, and the action is actually better than the NOS it replaced. I suspect that your handle has a key cover that has a misplaced pivot, or other defect that might be corrected with some attention, and perhaps a direct contract with Drake would be of value.

Thanks for the input. Actually the entire handle was out of alignment with the base, not just the key cover. When on the car, the handle did not point straight down as it should. The handle was great otherwise. I hope I can find one that is correct. I'm wondering if a little filing on the inside mechanism would help the trouble. Usually, failure to settle in the correct position with trunk and door handles resides in the latch mechanism. A new handle should have a good square shank, but the part of the latch that accepts it is often badly worn and/or sloppy. Sometimes you can reorient the handle in the base by working with the big nut that holds the handle assembly itself. I like the Drake repro because it doesn't require using the key every time you want to open the trunk, as did the original. If your latch or its strike are badly worn, C&G sells replacements. There are different latches for sedan, and the coupe and convertible don't interchange with the sedan. The strikes, however, are the same. Bob Drake's catalog shows the trunk handle assembly priced at $200. You can review his parts and prices at www.bobdrake.com I didn't pay $400 for a nice NOS handle several years ago. Most e-Bay items tend to be very overpriced, in my opinion, and often not as described, in my experience with the site.

I had a Bob Drakes trunk handle that lasted about 2 years and then broke apart. Was lucky I could finally get into the trunk. I was very lucky that a good friend gave me an orginial one that was almost perfect. This message was edited by Steve's 48 Ford on 1-6-11 @ 11:20 PM
