I have a 1948 ford speedometer that has locked up. It appears that it has been lubricated and now has gumed up. I presume I can clean it and re lube, but wonder what is the best products to use? Back in the day was their any procedure?

I soaked my NOS speedometer in MMO for a few months to free it up, but any penetrating oil will work. The key is to let it soak and every week, try to turn it by hand. I used a large cotter pin to turn mine. Tom

I also wonder , after it is freed up then do I clean away oils and then graphite it or silicone lube or etc?

Repairing a speedometer is not an amateur job, unless you don't expect it to be usable, anyway, or you are a clock maker. You can send it for an estimate to places such as Bob's Speedometer. The last NOS speedo we bought for a '47 was $900! Repair is almost always less expensive, unless you screw it up first. Try their web site www.bobsspeedometer.com We have used them.
