Can someone tell me if this is the correct color for my 39 engine and where I might find paint to match the original color?

Thanks,
Collin

just about all of the V8 suppliers sell the paint in rattle cans, but if you want a quart Hirsch in NJ has that also-enought to do several engines. Original color for 39 engines and lots of other years was a dark green. The head you have shown is like one on my 40 with the A not centered under the water outlet. I am pretty sure this is a later service replacement head from Ford, if you are doing a concourse restoration then you might consider changing the head, if not, Have fun and go to ride!

The subject of the "A" being in the middle of the head vs. towards the front is interesting at the very least.
The drawings show the 'A" to be placed near the front. There are NO notes that show it in the middle. Nope, none at all. There are however, documents that show the "A" was placed incorrectly (in the center) per the drawings and was brought to the attention of those in charge of determining the acceptance or rejection of same.
In reality most heads got the "A" cast in the middle.
The heads with the "A" near the front were very early 1939 production. As such, this would not be proper on a 1940 but rather on an early 1939 only.
It appears that Ford allowed for this manufacturing oversight even though it (location of "A") did not coincide with their drawings.
Now days we call them 'temporary deviations'. In reality, temporary is very ambiguous and can be 'this run', 'this month', 'this year' or 'forever'. I would hazard a guess and assume it was like that back in '39 as well.
