Topic: Oil Burn at Start Up

My '36 was rebuilt several years ago, and has little mileage on it. After sitting for 4 months, we recently started it up and had a small bit of oil burn, (blue smoke).
After she warmed up, all was fine. What actually occurs for oil seepage while sitting for a period of time?

The smoke you see is from oil that has seeped around the piston rings and valve guides. It is normal, particularly in older engines with worn or sticking rings, and should go away as soon as the engine is warm. Some advocate adding Marvel Oil to both the gas tank and crankcase to loosen rings, but don't overdo it or sparkplug fouling can result. If the smoke is white, instead of blue, you have an internal coolant leak. If it is black, it shows an overrich fuel mixture, which can be a misadjusted choke or other carb problem.
