Topic: Rough running '36?

Parked the car 7 weeks ago and ran great, started it up today and "pops & snaps" at idle and has a mild backfire on deceleration and a lack of power. Cleaned the plugs (black & sooty) and installed new condenser and still have the same problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you fill the gas tank before you parked it? We are again seeing lots of contaminated fuel as pump prices rise. Some stations are allowing their storage tanks to run dry before refilling due to cost. We have seen contamination with diesel fuel, water, and even liquid fertilizer.

Check you spark at idle. It should be at least 1/2 inch long and blue in color when a plug wire is held near a head nut. If the spark is orange color or not long enough, your coil could be failing.

If the spark is OK, do a cylinder balance test by shorting out each of the spark plugs in turn while idling. The engine should slow down the same amount with each plug shorted. If it does not slow down for one or more plugs, replace those plugs with new ones and retry the cylinder balance test. If the same cylinder(s) fail, do a compression test.

Bob & Tom, got good spark, did put a "fresh" cpl. of gallons in it just before starting it for the first time after sitting about 2 months but turns out that wasn't the problem either. Got some advice to put MMO in the carb while idling till dies, add some to the tank & crankcase let it sit for an hour then start. That's what I did and runs great again.
