I have painted my wheels for my 47 Ford Convertible. I need to know how many stripes the wheels should have? Thanks.

I have used a Buegler striper to stripe wheels. I mounted them in my lathe to turn them, but you could use a front spindle and hub with some kind of tool rest to do it. Works great.

As Old Henry sez there are three stripes. The center stripe is 1/8" and the outer two are 1/16" with about 3/32" to 1/16" between them. the center stripe is centered between the hubcap and the openings in the rim. The Buegler tool available from Eastwood is the gadget to use mounted in some sort of frame to hold it stable. If you have a an extra rear axle half housing it works great as a stand with a wheel hub riding on the bearing to center the rim. Ford must have used a similar setup except their painting tool had three beugler heads so that all three stripes went on at once. If you have an original rim you can see where all three heads were lowered and raised from the rim and the patterns of the heads themselves where the paint squeezed out along the sides. I assume you have the 41-48 Ford book. This gives you the correct stripe colors that went with each body color.

there was a description in the Northern Ohio club's site of a fixture made by a member there to do wheel stripes. the link to that site seems to be broken at this time. hopefully, it will come back up.

Or, you can go with something real simple like a swiveling stool like this one or swiveling bar stool. I've heard of it done on something that simple before. Or a swiveling office chair. I've heard of that one too. Or, if the paint's not too runny, just paint the wheel while still on the car jacked up turning the wheel by hand. Still Old Henry (P.S. Sorry about the huge file. I'm hoping when it's time to paint my stripes that my friend with a body shop has a Beugler to borrow cause the cheapest one with three heads is over $100.00 Still Old Henry

Run a want ad on this site and the Fordbarn. I'll bet you will find a Beugler striper quite cheap. There's a lot of them around sitting in cabinets and tool boxes that were only used once.

If you use one of "Stills" piano stools that he pictured, your stripes may end up as spirals, since the swivel action is actually an elevating screw. On the other hand, this might be appealing to observers, depending upon what they might be smoking. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
