When I bought my mostly original 42 wagon there were chrome plated escutcheons on the front door window and door handles. Disassembling the car I put them aside figuring they were something after market from one of the vendors at the time. I bought a set of butterscotch plastic escutcheons. Trying to install them I find that the shafts on the window and door operators are too short for the new ones to fit but the chrome plated ones are thinner and fit just fine. So now the question that maybe some other 42 wagon owner can answer. Did the 42s have chrome escutcheons even though no book mentions them? The rear doors do have longer shanks on the window operators and the plastic escutcheons fit. Now 42 was the first year to have roll up windows in the rear doors so it would make sense that they might have the new style escutcheons. Would the front door operators and escutcheons be a carry over from 41 even though there is no mention of chrome escutcheons for that year either? So can anyone shed some light on this mystery?

I looked thru both the body parts book, and Lorin Sorinsen's fine book on woodies, and didn't find mention of plated escutcheons, except on several models of trucks. 1942 was a time of intense changes as civilian production came to a halt, so it isn't unusual to find odd combinations. It would seem likely that non-woodie regulators were installed with shanks too short for the wood paneled doors because that was what was available. I installed plated escutcheons in my '47 convertible because the plastic repros didn't match the knobs, wheel, etc. "Running changes" were a Ford trait, so often there is no "correct" configuration.

42wagon, I have a 40 wagon and the escutchion for the window winder is plated and swedged onto the handle and not listed as a separate piece with a separate part number. It will come off though because it isn't on there very tight. The door handle escutchion however has a 01C- part number meaning it also fits a pickup or commercial vehicle. Perhaps on the 42 both escutchions were originally part of the handles. If you can find a 1942 Body Parts Book you can see if they list a separate part. In 1940 they do for the front door handle only.

Thanks guys I guess Henry snuck one by the guys writing the books. I thought I was going nuts when I couldn't get the new parts to fit. Still doesn't seem right but that's the way it is. Ted

42 wagon I'm new to the forum,thats why the tardy response, but I have been a v 8 club member since 1973. I have owned a 42 Mercury wagon for 25 years. It was an unrestored original when I brought it home, rough but unmolested. It had chrome escutcheons which I believe to be correct, I can't prove it but considering the rest of the car was untouched I can't see anyone changing just the escutcheons. 42 merc.

42merc Since the two bodies were built at the same place at roughly the same time it would stand to reason that they both would have the chrome escutcheons. A question though. Does your Merc have chrome escutcheons on all doors or just the front? My Ford has chrome just on the front and the shafts on the rear door window regulators are too long to have had chrome here as well. 42 Wagon
