I've got a seal leaking on one of my pumps, any further advantage to having Skip rebuild them? They appear to me to have improved impellers already??

I'm not all that familiar with the evolution of flathead water pumps, but the '53 cooling system (pumps and engines) is surely much improved over the earlier models, and, it seems to me, the earlier engines have the over-heating problems. I have a '51 engine that is essentially the same as a '53, and I have never had an over-heating problem. So I see no need to upgrade your pumps. However, if "Skip's" pumps don't cost anymore than the others, go for it. Richard

Both Speedway and Drake now carry an improved pump that has the new style impeller. Also there is Fryer's pumps and they advertise in the V-8 Times. Personally I have used Fryer's pumps and they worked extremely well. Both he and Skip stand behimd their products.

Outside of the cost, the main difference between having your pumps rebuilt, and buying a pair of the new ones is that the new type have ball bearings, instead of the bushings, and there is some change in the seals. There have been reports of problems getting the body castings installed, at least on one side, due to mislocation of the holes, so be sure of the vendor's return policy. Reusing the original pumps eliminates that worry, and both have the improved impellers that are supposed to increase coolant circulation.
