how to remove the tumblers? they are held in place by a small plug - solder maybe. would anyone know how to remove the plug and then replace it once i figure out why the key no longer works?

The key is probably worn to the point it no longer activates the tumblers. Unless you know a lot about locks I would not attempt to take it apart. I would send it to a good locksmith such as; www.jessersclassickeys.com.

I had a '35 door lock cylinder that was not working with the original key that fit the ignition lock. I removed the door lock cylinder and had a key cut to the numbers that were on the side of the cylinder. I still could not get the lock to open with this new key. The locksmith sprayed inside the key hole with PB Blaster and kept working with it and finally handed it back to me and said I would probably need to remove the pins & springs and replace them with new. I kept working the key in and out and carefully turning the key each time it was fully inserted and it finally turned and unlocked. One of the pins had frozen in the cylinder and it just took time and lots of PB Blaster to get it loose. It's back in the door now and still working well. On another ignition cylinder that I had re-keyed by the late Bill Sutton, what he did to hold those little pins, springs and discs in place was to make an X over the hole that held the pin, spring, and disc, using a very small tool that looked like a miniature chisel. The staking from that chisel point held everything in place. Nothing else was used to hold the discs in place. JM This message was edited by JM on 11-17-10 @ 3:16 PM

JM, any idea how the locksmith got the discs out? the little ones that hold the springs and tumblers in place? thanks.

fenback, I really do not remember exactly how the locksmith got those little discs out of the cylinder, but I "think" he may have tapped them on the edge with a very small punch and they turned enough in the hole to pull them out with needle nose pliers. JM
