We are in restoration process on a 1939 Deluxe Tudor which I purchased in 2003, received 1968 vintage title reflecting VIN #185073048 assigned to me by owner whom has since passed away. We have located VIN # 185178204 on both LF frame rail and matching # on trans/engine bell housing. Body appears to be original by condition and attachment evidence. Does your registry archives reflect either or both VINs? If not, any information on alternate tracing sources would be most welcomed as we wish to confirm mileage and history. Thanks - MDB

The numbers on the frame and transmission certainly fall within 1939 production. The frame was stamped by hand in three places along the left frame rail as you probably know. The numbers stamped on the frame originally matched the number on the transmission. Cars remaining with the original transmission are few and far between. If yours does in fact match - good for you! Apparently the title you received is not the one for this car. The numbers should (and did originally) match.

Yes, we are aware of VIN locations and matching VINs a plus. Speedometer reads 23,000+ miles, which is hard to believe, may have rolled over 100K but condition of body, frame and interior could allow possibility of less. From the 1968 title received it appears to have been located in Rockford, IL area through early 2003. Thanks for additional information anyone may offer.

What I may be telling you may be information that you already know but here goes. The so called VIN number on the car is nothing more than a sequential serial number stamped on the engine/transmission at the Rouge engine plant. The engine was then shipped to an assembly plant. When the engine was installed in a frame the number was then stamped on the frame. Apparently no records were kept of which engines were shipped where or the date the car was actually assembled, and there is no code telling you anything more about the car. You have a bigger problem unfortunately. You have a title for a car other than the one you are standing next to. If you go to sell the car how do you prove to the next person that you have title to your car? Also what happens if someone were to produce the actual title with the VIN that is on the car?
