Topic: oil pressure

I took my '47 Ford out for a spin on the highway. I was doing 55mph when I noticed that the gauge read ZERO oil pressure. On surface streets it went from zero to 15-20#. The engine is strong, good compression, etc. The oil was changed a couple of weeks ago. Could it be the sending unit? How do I test the sending unit? Thanks!

It very well could be the sending unit. I test them by hooking the unit up to my air compressor and a spare gauge. I use a 6 volt lantern battery for a power source.

You can check out the gauge by grounding the wire going to the sending unit. The dash gauge should go to high end of the scale when the ignition switch is turned on.

The very first check that I would make is be sure that the connections between the sending unit and the gauge are tight.

Lou, The first thing I would do is make sure you have good oil pressure before you start testing the sender or gages. Get a mechanical gage ($15 @ Harbor Freight), attach a 5 or 6" pipe nipple to it and screw it into the port that the sender is now. That will tell you the correct pressure so you don't have to worry while you are trouble shooting gages. The sending unit is in a tough place to get at to remove with standard tools. If you have trouble getting it out I can e-mail you a picture of a simple, easy to make tool. Then next step is to do what TomO describes.
