I installed a pressure brake light switch about 15 months ago, 2000 miles, and it needs replaced again. Could my brake fluid be contaminated or is there another problem? Is this a common problem? Thanks!

Some people report this problem with silicon brake fluid. Otherwise, you probably just got a bad switch. In many years of fooling with cars, I have never had a hydraulic brake switch fail. Richard

This is certainly a common problem for me personally. I seem to have to replace that pressure switch almost yearly. Still Old Henry

There was an item in V8 Times some time back regarding substituting a Harley Davidson brake light switch with positive results.

You might consider going to a mechanical switch, such as NAPA SL-128. I have one mounted to the wooden floorboard behind the brake pedal arm on my '40, and it works great.

try E-BAY for a NEW OLD STOCK, USA, made unit,or try a swap meet,. this is your best bet, or go mechanial, the new silicone fluid will make the switch have premature failure,I been down this road before., if you use silicone brake fluid, get the Harley switch, hope this helps. 37 RAGTOPMAN an KEEP on FORDIN,,,,!!!

Ron Francis makes a low pressure switch that is advertised to be silicon compatible. I installed one a few months back and it works so far. It also comes on with much less pedal pressure than the one it replaced. Google "Ron Francis Wiring". This message was edited by deluxe40 on 11-9-10 @ 8:58 AM

I aggree,the Harley Davidson switch only worked one year for me with silicon brake fluid. The Ron Francis switch has been good so far, it is a very low pressure switch,I don't know if this is going to prolong its life,but you barely touch pedal and it does its job.

I installed the Ron Francis brake light switch today. It is a low pressure switch that doesn't require a lot of foot pressure before it comes on. I think this is a good safety feature because when you are at a traffic light you probably aren't putting much pressure on your brakes and with the Ron Francis switch the brake lights will still be on. So far it all seems good and I am pleased.

Still a good number from Ford.Motorcraft pn is SW 24 and the regular Ford pn is C1AZ-13480-A.They refer to it as a "stoplight switch" and show application 1939 to 1964.Hope that helps. John
