Topic: modern long life Antifreeze

blarge    -- 11-07-2010 @ 1:45 PM
I read an article that was on the Rolls-Royce web site (rrbew.co.uk)that states that modern antifreeze like Prestone that has the 150,000 mile life uses a additive package that can damage the brass and solder in my 46 Mercury radiator. They indicate that the Peak brand is still the old formulation and OK to use.
Does anyone have experience that modern antifreeze has caused leaks or damage to the old Fords?

No, but I use Sierra antifreeze.

The article also said that Sierra was the other brand of antifreeze that was OK to use in old cars. You should be fine with Sierra. It also said that Zerex was not OK in old cars. Bill Large

Almost all antifreeze turns acidic over time. There are test strips available to check it. If the coolant gets very acidic, it becomes an electrolyte that attacks dissimilar metals, such as the brass in the radiator, as well as the hoses, which have enough carbon in the rubber to conduct electricity. You can see this happening by putting a voltmeter between ground and the coolant in the radiator neck. I use Sierra, and change it every three years. At our shop, we just received information regarding the expanding array of antifreeze to be used in new cars and trucks. Using an incorrect type can void the warranty in some cases.
