Having just completed overhauling the rear brakes I was unsure how tight to make the brake drum retaining rear axle nut? Thanks

Pete, The axle nut needs to be tight, period. First, make sure there are no burrs on the taper, and it must be dry, no lubricant. The key should not be sloppy either. I hope you checked for cracks at the inner end of the keyway. If any at all, the axle will break, no doubt about it. Put on a new blue felt behind the washer, install the nut and tighten it with a cheater bar. Then tighten until you get to the next castle slot for the cotter pin. Check it again after a short drive if you want to be sure. Unless your threads have been heavily damaged by abuse of the axle end, you won't over-tighten it. The keyway cracks I mentioned are caused by that nut being tightened by a weakling. Alan

The correct torque is 175 ft lbs.
