Topic: 46 Speedometer Cable Routing

Despite enjoying my dual exhaust on my 46 Coupe, the existing routing of my speedometer cable is causing erratic bouncing due to the cable now being close to the exhaust pipe..I need to come up with a new routing to see if it will make a difference. Of course I am not ruling-out that my speedometer may be in need of a rebuild but I would sure like to try re-routing the cable first to see if there is any improvement. If anyone is also running duals and resorted to changing the path of the speedo cable, I would sure appreciate knowing what you did. Many thanks! Steve

When I installed dual exhaust on my '47, I moved the speedo cable away from the left side pipe without any problems. A bouncing needle can be caused by lack of proper lubrication of the inner cable and/or a too sharp bend in the casing. I had that problem before I installed the duals, so I shipped the speedo to Bob's Speedometer and found the problem was a worn out "bushing" (actually a hole in the pot metal case), changing the spacing of the magnetic disks. We diagnosed the problem by disconnecting the cable at the torque tube and driving it with a variable speed drill. That helps you pin down where the binding is occurring, and whether the cable or the head is the culprit. I found a beautiful (and pricey) NOS replacement that is steady as a rock.
