When I let up on the accelerator on my 46 flathead going downhill, I always get a series of soft backfire or flapping noises through the mufflers out the rear. The car has headers, and my trusted mechanic says the header gasket on the left bank is sucking oxygen and needs to be replaced. Any other possibility?

sounds to me like the mechanic is correct,it sound like a air leaking in the exhaust system, it might be something else, but to check it better,, this might work, with the engine idleing try putting a rag in or over the exhaust pipe and see if you hear a exhaust leak up front, becarefull not to burn your hands , use good gloves, hope this helps,.37RAGTOPMAN

Backfiring is often the result of a vacuum leak somewhere on the intake manifold. Check for a cracked hose or loose fitting. A leaking exhaust manifold should be easy to hear with the hood open and the engine idling. If the noise is only audible at the tailpipe, the gasket probably isn't the culprit.

Supereal, Thanks so much. Hood up - everything is very quiet at idle and fast idle. I hear nothing remotely resembling a gasket leak. I have been working with the vacumm line, carb to distributor, and had repair done where the line was stripped at carb connection. Now I'm going to double check everything and may save myself a ton of money. Thanks again.
