How can I tell if there is a short that drains the battery when the car is not running?

You can remove one of the battery cables from the battery and touch it back to the battery. A short will cause the a spark as the cable and the battery touch.

For a more definitive test which would show a high resistance (low current) drain connect an amp meter between the battery and the battery cable. Most multimeters have provisions for measuring low currents.

If you are concerned that the current flow would exceed the meter capability you can place a resistor between the battery and the battery cable and measure the voltage across the resistor. The current in amps will be the voltage measured across the resistor divided by the value of the resistance in ohms.

If you do not have a electrical test meter, you can use a test light, or can make one out of a 6 volt bulb, like a spare parking light bulb, #63 6 volt, solder a wire to the contact on the bottom and another to the side. ,
take a ground cable off the battery, place this tester between the positive ground terminal on the battery and a ground,
if it lights up you have a drain, you can disconnect wires, or accessories,,, till it goes out,
hope this helps. 37RAGTOPMAN an KEEP on FORDIN,,,!!!!
