Hi I have just pulled my ignition key out of my 1939 Ford and now it will not go back in. the inside appears to have failed , the streeing is locked and also the ingnition lever is locked , how do you get the ingnition barrel out with out wrecking to much, I am thankful this happened at home. thanks.

Try spraying WD40 into the lock to flush out the hard grease. You may not have to pull the lock cylinder. Tom

The lock cylinder is secured by a "break off" pin that must be removed by drilling and extraction. Most lock cylinders fail because something beside a graphite lube was injected, causing an accumulation of dirt, etc, which has locked a pin. You may be able to free it up by injecting solvent, but it is more than likely that it will fail again unless the cylinder is fixed by a locksmith. Check your ignition key, too, If it is badly worn, as many are, you may be able to get it to work by lots of jiggling. If it does unlock, get a new key made and don't reinsert the old one.

Thanks for the help , I have managed to get the locking cylinder out and a small brass pin fell out of it , so a new Steering lock cylinder is needed , I have found on the net a very good artical on restoring the steering Lock and how to get the cylinder out, Page 10 of MY 1939 FORD STANDARD COUPE , the restoration, Thanks again Stewart Quertier , New Zealand.
