Topic: Bendix Style Brakes

Am considering putting Bendix Style Brakes on the front of my '48 Tudor as I don't like the amount of pedal effort it takes to stop the car. Is this a worthwhile expenditure or am I wasting my money?

You should drive a few other Fords that use the same brakes. There may be a problem with your brakes that could be fixed cheaper than replacing them. The brakes are definitely not as good as the power assisted, 4 wheel disc, anti-lock brakes on my late model Mercedes but I never thought they were that bad.

I doubt you would see much, if any, improvement. The Lockheed system is as effective if properly installed and maintained. When we are faced with a complaint that the brakes are bad, we usually find that the shoes are reversed. The primary (long) lining faces toward the front of the car, the shorter (secondary) lining faces toward the rear. We also find that bonded linings were installed that are too hard for non-power assisted brakes, a common problem today. If the shoes are matched to the drums, and the drum surface is not galled, the brakes should be adequate. You may have to readjust the anchors to get full contact. My '47 will slide the wheels in a panic stop with the original setup. If I was going to make any changes in brakes, I'd opt for front discs. There are good packages for that.
