Topic: Sizing fan belts

My 1947 59 engine is now complete and I need a wide fan belt to drive the water pumps and alternator, which is mounted offset to the right (passenger) side. I have a front-mounted electric pusher fan on a brand new radiator, so there will be no mechanical fan. How do I select the correct length fan belt? Using a flexible ruler, the total circumference seems to be about 56 inches. Does this sound correct?

Bill: The width and pitch of the V belt is as important as the length. We obtain ours at a local eletric motor shop that handles a wide variety of belts. When we need a non-standard belt, we take the original to that shop to determine the type, and try one that measures about the same length as you have determined with a tape measure. If too tight or loose, we then try the next size. I have a non-standard belt on my '47 because of an alternator, and we went to a "cogged" type belt which seems to work better, even with the proper water pump slack.

You can also try a piece of rope. about the same size as the belt would be, wrap it around the pulleys., mark it and take off and measure it,
also I heard the cogged belts were made to run cooler.and are more flexible.
hope this helps 37RAGTOPMAN,
NAPA has the green belts in many sizes, these are made for garden tractors and other uses, but are very good belts, will last a long time,
