Trying to remove the headlight/horn switch at the bottom of my steering box.Once the wire retainer is unhooked from the metal cover, should the switch slide off the end of the horn rod or is there something else holding it in place?..

When you remove the wire bail, you should be able to lower the bottom half of the switch body. Sometimes it takes a bit of "persuasion" to get the halves apart. The "spider" (the part that turns the switch) is held on the rod by a "C" clip that is released when the spider is pushed up against the spring so the rod can be withdrawn. That style switch was not one of Ford's "better ideas", and is subject to oil leakage from the steering box. You can clean the switch with carb or brake cleaner. Many vendors sell an end plate with a longer tube (B-3568) to reduce the leak.
