What is the proper way to tighten the gen and water pumps belts on my 46?

Loosen the fan mounting bolts and the generator mounting nut and then adjust the generator by pulling up on it, to get 1/2" freeplay in the belt at a point halfway between the generator and the water pump. Tighten the generator nut and then adjust the fan belt by pulling up on the fan until there is 1/2" deflection half way between the crank pulley and the fan pulley.

Here is an illustration of what TomO was describing.

I have found it easiest to lift the heavy generator and hold it with one hand while tightening the bolt with the other if I wedge a large screw driver right behind the generator bracket between the front of the generator and the intake manifold. Then push up or down on the screwdriver handle to lift the heavy generator to the right height and hold it in place while tightening the screw.

The fan isn't all that heavy and I can just lift it into place with one hand while tightening one bolt with the other.

Thanks to both of you for the proper way.

I've never found it as easy as Old Henry implies. I guess it's just me. Good luck.

51f1, The use of a small prybar with a wooden block with one hand frees up the other to tighten the nut.
