  What way do you find out the ratio of a rear end
using the number that is stamped on the rear
What is the formula

Stroker    -- 10-19-2010 @ 6:42 AM
  Just divide the smaller number into the larger number.

  Number is hard to decipher but from what I CAN IT LOOKS LIKE 934 Now if I divide 9 into 34 it comes up with 3.777777778 is it a 3.78 rear or should I be doing it another way

  The 9 into the 34 is a 3:78 ratio but just remember that is what is stamped on housing,someone may have changed insides over the last 60-70 years.

3 into 94 does not compute

  Gene:

Correctly done, it is 9 into 34, which comes up 3.777777777777777777777777777777777777 etc.
The reason that it won't come up as 3.78 is that all rear axle ratios are designed to be "indivisible", in that they will not divide evenly. This is common with gear sets that are not required to have a precise ratio such as timing gears. These ratios are called "hunting tooth"
ratios, and the concept is to not have the same teeth repeatedly meshing so as to spread out the wear pattern over the life of the gears.

This is why a 4.44 ratio is actually 4.444444444444 etc, (9/40); a 4:11 is 4.111111111 etc, (9/37);
and a 3.54 works out to 3.45454545 etc, (11/39.

So, the math will never come out to 3.78, as that is simply the "rounded" value of the true ratio.
