When the ignition switch is turned on the fuel gauge
needle moves from the bottom to the top, even if the
tank is not full. On switching off the needle falls to
the bottom. What is happening and what is the fix?

you either have the sending wire going to ground, or the float is bad and is sinking to the bottom of the tank, replace with modern one,you can get from SYNDERS,about $4.00 for Model A'S
Also TRACE the sending wire from ft to rear.
or disconnect the wire going to the tank, from back of the gauge, and turn the ignition on and see what happens,
hope this helps 37RAGTOPMAN an KEEP on FORDIN,,,!!!

If "FULL" is at the top of the gauge look for a sticking arm on the sending unit in the gas tank, or a grounded wire from the gauge to the sending unit. Check for the grounded wire by removing the wire on the sender, isolating the wire terminal from ground and then turn the ignition switch on, if the gauge does not move the wire is clear of grounds, then remove the sender and check it. with the sender removed you can jumper the wire from the gauge to the sender terminal and a second jumper from car ground to the sender body, with the ignition switch on move the sender arm and the gauge should respond properly.
