  I think it is just for clearance for the banjo when hitting a big bump, not for access to anything.

  Thanks for your answer Deuce but I would have thought the panel would have been solid with a dome or curve in it if that were the case. What goes in the hole to fill it in? Has anyone got some photos?

  There is a stamped cover that fits over the hole that looks like a big shallow dog dish. I bet there is a picture of it in the 33-34 book, or at lesst in one of the parts diagrams.
Why they made it a separate piece is not clear to me. Maybe it had to do with stamping techniques and the dies. A good question for the 33/34 advisor!
