To install a 42 distributor on my 39 block, what needs to be done ? Can the timing cover be changed, cam, I see Speedway has a spacer to put a 2 bolt on a 3 bolt timing cover. I'm guessing that the 42 drive tab is longer on the dist as I see a drive adapter to go the other way. I have my engine disassembled and looking for some options. Thanks Zeke

You can change the camshaft and front cover or buy the spacer from Speedway. IMHO the helmet (37-41) distributors are easier to service than the 42 Crab style. Tom

The "crab" distributor was a one year only type. It was replaced because it had problems with water infiltration of the cap. I agree that the correct type for your car is a better choice than converting to the crab style.

Never gave the 42 crab much thought about moisture problems but you are correct 9 places for water to get in besides cap gasket, only two plus two caps to let water in, or coil base gasket on 37-41 helmet type.
