Recently changed plunger spring with a heavier one. Unexpected results: 100 psi at start up (new gauge-20W oil) - hot at idle 15-25 psi - 40-50 psi @ 5,000 rpm. Has anyone shortened this spring: how much is reasonable.

Did you check the pressure with a mechanical gauge? As I recall, the 60 had a different type of oil pump that was a part of the front main bearing cap, and had a built in relief valve instead of the kind that fits the front of the valve chamber in the larger engines. I didn't find any specs on that valve in my stuff. I'd suspect that you would need to find a replacement spring, rather than try to modify one. We have bought 60 hp parts from Little Dearborn in Minneapolis. 888/282-2066.
