Hi; Guys; I have a rebuilt 40 engine bored out to 3&316ths. A holley #59 carb with 49 main jets. Autolite 216 plugs. Runs great but plugs are burning a little on the white side. Should i go to bigger main jets and if so how big? Thanks all.

RG, You may not even see a difference with 49's, so I'd say 50's are a good bet. Some guys just drill them if they can't find a desired size.

Both 50 and 51 jets are available at Vintage Speed.

It is unlikely that increasing jet size will produce much, if any, change. If your plugs are not actually burning, it is better than running the mixture rich enough to smoke them up. Going to a "colder" plug is better if the engine is running OK. Doing a "home brew" modification of the jets often produces a new problem. The passage in the jets at manufacture is polished to enhance atomization of the fuel. Just drilling them reduces their effectiveness by introducing ridges in the bore of the jet.
