I HAVE A 1934 FORD REAREND. I AM TRYING TO FIND OUT THE GEAR RATIO.THE OLD NUMBER THAT I CAN READ IS THE NUMBER 48 ON THE BOTTOM OF THE REAREND.CAN ANY TELL ME WHAT IT STANDS FOR?

The number 48 is the part number prefix. That would indicate you have a '35 or later axle. You may find a set of numbers stamped on the center web of the housing (banjo) that will give you the ratio. For instance, if you find "34-9", the ratio is 3.78. 39-11 is 3.54, and 37-9 is 4.11. The numbers, if there, may be faint, and hard to see. If you don't find any, block one axle from turning, and turn the drive shaft, counting the turns, until you get one full revolution of the other axle.

If your speedometer is somewhat accurate you can look on your speedometer gear housing where it is attached to the transmission and look for the ratios stamped in the gear housing. The correct ratios are in supereal's comments.
