Topic: tie rod replacement pointers

I'm heading down to work on an original 36 in a few days and have new tie rods as replacements. Having never done this job and having read the previous post about tie rods incorrectly installed, I wondered are there any other gotchas or advice? Do folks typically replace the sleeves as well?

should be straight fordward. The holes in the spindle arms are tapered as is the tie rod end mounting end. they can only go in place one way, for 36 the tie rod end is on the bottom and the nut is on top of the spindle arm. there is only one possible sleeve and it is the 1941 style sleeve between the male drag link end and the male tie rod end. If you have this there is no need to replace it unless some of the hardware (bolts and nuts) for the clamps are damaged.

I know this is basic advice, but be sure your new tie rod ends have the correct threads. One should be a right hand thread and one should be a left hand thread.

Count the turns as you remove the old ends and then install the new ends with the same count. This will keep the toe in close to the proper setting.

If you are installing a replacement rod, measure from the center of the grease fitting holes and install the new ends to this measurement. Keep the number of turns on each side equal.
