Looking for see if a Ford car 3 speed manual column shift w/ overdrive from a V8 flathead will bolt up to my 52 F-1 V8 Flattie. Looking for some higher cruising speeds. The gears in my 3 speed are: 1st-2.78, 2nd-1.62, 3rd-1.00, Reverse-3.63. Are the car gear ratios the same? And yes, I'm also looking at a '57-'72 F-100 3.50 rear end to help.

You may wish to get some info from Mitch*ll Mfg. Their e-mail address is mitchmanfc@frontiernet.net. I don't know if they make a unit for your open driveshaft, but it is worth looking into. I recall working on pickups with the car type OD, but the rear mount and driveshaft were different from the cars. As to transmission ratios, all three speed boxes are straight through in high gear, so the rear end gearing determines the highway engine speed. Which replacement axle will be best is determined by the ratio of the overdrive. A 3-50 axle would likely be too low with an OD.

If you have any old wrecking yards (auto recycler is the PC term) in your area you should be able to find the F-100 rear end. Even if you only find the housing I would buy it. The 9 inch third members are fairly common at swap meets. Any 9 inch 3rd member(pickup, passenger, van, etc) will fit the housing. Just be aware there are different axles. The most common is the 28 spline and usually that is what you will find in the 3rd member.
The 3 speed overdrive will bolt up to your motor with the correct bell housing. You may have to make or modify the transmission mount. You will probably have to have the driveshaft shortened as it will be too long.
